Since his retirement in 2007, Seeger has designed and delivered training programs for the US Intelligence Community and the US Special Operations Command. He is an open-source/archival researcher for an intelligence community museum and an advisor/subject matter expert for Sandia National Labs.
Seeger is also a published author with 15 novels, two short stories and thirty articles in the Intelligence Community peer reviewed journal, Studies in Intelligence. He has two in the Journal of the T.E. Lawrence Society and in 2023, he published three articles for the blogs Watches of Espionage and two in the online blog for the company SpyScape and two articles for the Foreign Policy Research Institute.
Before serving in the CIA, Seeger attended Eisenhower College for his BA and the University of Iowa for his MA. From 1979 to 1980, Seeger worked for the office of the Wyoming State Archeologist. From 1980-1985, he was an airborne infantry officer in the 82nd Airborne Division. After leaving active duty, he served in the Army reserves from 1985 to 1994.

John R. Seeger (J.R.) has been an archeologist, a paratrooper, an intelligence officer, a military trainer, an archival researcher and a novelist.
He served in the CIA for 22 years. During that service, he served 17 years in multiple field assignments focused on counterterrorism, counterintelligence and irregular warfare. Seeger led multiple, small unit teams during his service including leading one of the CIA teams that infiltrated into Afghanistan after 9/11. Seeger’s CIA awards include the Intelligence Star, the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, and the George H.W. Bush Award for Counterterrorism Excellence.
