Why would one family choose to fight for the enemy of the British Empire, while another defends it?
It’s 1915. The Great War has descended into horrific trench warfare with the great nations fighting over inches of European ground. In the Middle East, the war is between the British Empire and the Ottoman Empire, allied to Germany. Caught in the middle of this Middle East war are two families of spies — the Bankrofts, who support British operations in Mesopotamia, and the O’Connell family, on the side of the German and Ottoman operations. Both families trained in the mystic arts, mesmerism and intelligence tradecraft in British India, but one chose patriotism and the other, treason. The intelligence chess game between these two families places them at even greater risk as their tribal allies switch sides and fight for their own reasons.

A new century has brought a new competitor to the Great Game of Empires: the Germans, in alliance with the Young Turks of the Ottoman Empire, hope to gain control over the oil fields of the Middle East. And while treachery and deceit have always been part of the espionage trade, teenagers Elizabeth Bankroft and Michael O’Connell, alumni of the intelligence school known as the Viceroy’s College, must also use their mystic arts training to help their military masters.
It’s a game of move and counter-move between the Russians, the British, the Germans and the Turks, but that’s the easy challenge. Elizabeth and Michael and their families of spies must also survive a world going to war.

How far will a teenager go to save her parents?
To the ends of the earth.
Elizabeth Bankroft is a thoroughly modern teenager in the Edwardian age. She spends part of the year with her parents in British India and part of the year with her grandparents in England. When her parents decide to send her to a college, Elizabeth resents the idea of what she calls a “finishing school” in India.
At the Viceroy’s College in the foothills of the Himalayas, “finishing” will take on a whole new meaning. The college is, in fact, the British India school for spies. There, Elizabeth will learn the family business of espionage, martial arts and Tibetan mystic arts.
But even before completing her training, she will be called upon to use her exceptional skills to save herself and her family. In the end, it is Elizabeth’s training from the School for the Great Game that will win the day.
